Microtech Ram Lock Knives: MSI vs. Amphibian
Original video: Quick Microtech Amphibian Review - Heavy Duty Ramlock Folder
If there’s one knife I’ve put through its paces, it’s the Microtech MSI (Microtech Standard Issue). This thing has been my go-to for hard use, breaking down boxes, and general work tasks, and it holds up like a champ. But recently, it inspired me to try another Ram Lock knife—the Microtech Amphibian.
Today, I want to compare these two beasts and share my thoughts on what makes them fantastic work knives.
The Microtech MSI: My Everyday Workhorse
✅ Large but lightweight – Feels substantial without being too heavy
✅ Super strong Ram Lock – Reliable and easy to operate
✅ Great action – Drops shut like a guillotine
✅ Tough, functional design – Perfect for heavy-duty use
I’ve used the MSI for everything from cutting down boxes to outdoor tasks, and it never lets me down. The Ram Lock is incredibly strong, using an internal rod-and-spring mechanism that keeps it secure even under stress.
It’s a big knife, but it’s light enough to carry daily, making it one of my all-time favorite folders.
Enter the Microtech Amphibian: An Upgraded Ram Lock Knife
I loved the MSI so much that I decided to grab another Ram Lock knife, the Microtech Amphibian. It’s similar in function but offers a few premium upgrades.
What Makes the Amphibian Different?
✔️ Aluminum Handles – Feels sturdier and more premium than the MSI’s composite material
✔️ M390MK Blade Steel – More wear-resistant and holds an edge longer
✔️ Unique Blade Shape – Clip-point/drop-point hybrid with a recurve for extra slicing power
✔️ Thumb Stud-Style Opener – More traditional deployment compared to the MSI
The Amphibian is heavier and more solid in hand, which makes it feel more robust, but that also means it’s better suited for jeans or work pants rather than lightweight carry.
How They Compare in Everyday Use
Feature Microtech MSI Microtech Amphibian Blade Steel M390MK M390MK Handle Material Composite Aluminum Lock Type Ram Lock Ram Lock Weight Lighter Heavier Pocket Clip Deep carry Shallow (sticks out more) Deployment Multiple options (thumb hole, flick) Thumb stud-style opener Best Use All-purpose EDC Heavy-duty/work knife
Both knives share the same strong locking mechanism and smooth deployment, but the Amphibian is heavier and better for tough jobs. The MSI is more versatile and easier to carry daily.
One Issue with the Amphibian: The Pocket Clip
The milled pocket clip on the Amphibian isn’t ideal—it doesn’t sit deep enough, meaning the knife rides high in the pocket. If you have shallow pockets, this can be a problem, especially when sitting or driving. I wish the clip was positioned differently or offered a deep-carry option.
Final Thoughts: Which One Should You Get?
✔️ Get the MSI if you want a lighter, everyday-friendly work knife.
✔️ Get the Amphibian if you prefer a heavier, more rugged tool for serious tasks.
Both of these knives are awesome, durable, and built for real-world use. The Ram Lock is rock solid, and I’ve never had it fail, no matter how hard I use them.
